Blogging Versus YouTubing - Which Is More Profitable? (Part 1)

First of all we are going to look at what it means to be not just a Blogger but a profitable one and we'll consider some points we would later compare with YouTubing. Points like:

  • Cost of being a Blogger
  • Challenges in Blogging
  • Blogger's Potential earnings

1. Cost Of Being A Blogger

When we talk about the cost of being a Blogger it usually refers to the money you have to invest in. You certainly need money to purchase a custom domain and you also need money to pay for hosting. So you need to out those things into consideration before deciding to set foot in the Blogging career. Another area that may need money is if you want to hire an SEO expert to work on your website visibility (in terms of ranking on Google search). You also need money if you want to buy a premium template for your website. What about buying SEO tools that will improve your blog ranking? Obviously you need money too. Of course most of these costs can be avoided but if you want to get serious and take Blogging as your career then you need money to purchase those things I've mentioned.

2. Challenges In Blogging

There are certain challenges in Blogging you might not realize if you haven't started Blogging yet. Some of those challenges are:

  • Traffic : Sometimes you constantly need to hustle for traffic so that you keep earning money via any ads network you might be using. As a Blogger no matter how good you are you sometimes have to battle for traffic. With perseverance you'll be able to come out of it successfully.

  • Downtime : Since you don't have full control over any company that host your website then you are bound to face downtime sometimes and it's unavoidable. Most downtime occurs when the company are upgrading their services and there's usually a notification sent to all their customers. It depends on the company how many hours or days they'll be offline because of certain upgrades. Do during these periods you could loose a lot of traffics since your website is currently unavailable.

3. Blogger's Potential earnings

A Blogger's potential earnings refers to estimated earnings he could earn per visits and clicks from ads networks. In this article we'll use Google Adsense as example.

Adsense pays Bloggers 68% of whatever an advertiser pays to Google for advert while 32% goes to them. What you earn depends much on how much traffic you have, the quality of that traffic and how many clicks you gain from those traffics. Cost per click (CPC) is what you earn per clicks on Google adsense. Your CPC would likely differ from other because of some several reasons including the fact that you share a different niche with the other person. Yes, some niches pay than the other. If you are on a good niche you can earn nothing less than $0.15 per clicks. This means that you'll be making $15 per 100 clicks on your website. Some other niches can earn you up to $5 - 7 per click!

It might seem hard for you at the initial time. But if you have enough traffics particularly organic traffics then it would become easier for you. The more you keep going the more you gather more momentum and keep earning higher.

  • Potential earnings of a YouTuber

1. The Cost Of  YouTubing

Does it really cost to become a YouTuber? If yes, how much? Well, let me surprise you that becoming a YouTuber is definitely free. However, as a YouTuber you should buy some physical equipment that will aid good quality contents. For example, mic, camera, chair, table, lamp, etc. This especially applies to people that deals with product reviews. When you provide quality contents to your subscribers and visitors they'll be more glued to your channel and even recommend people to your YouTube channel. But if you're just starting up new and don't want to spend money you could manage and start a tutorial video channel using screen records instead of appearing on camera.

2. Some Challenges In YouTubing

As a YouTuber you can't avoid some challenges that may come your way. They might include;

  • Low Subscribers : Obviously you need enough subscribers and viewers so you could make enough money off your contents on YouTube. Sometimes you may feel frustrated about it but at times goes on if you take it serious your YouTube channel will continue growing gradually and you'll eventually have enough subscribers.

  • Traffic : Traffic might also be an issue if you lack SEO skills. Unlike Blogging where backlinks can help you improve your ranking, on YouTube there's nothing like backlinks and so your SEO skills comes into play. In the next I'll talk about how you can do SEO on YouTube.

3. Potential Earnings Of A YouTuber

Potential earnings of a YouTuber is slightly different from that of a Blogger. As a YouTuber you earn each someone clicks an advert on your video or not. This means that a visitor doesn't need to click on ads displayed on your channel before you earn. Like Bloggers Google pays YouTubers 68% revenue to her publishers. An average earnings a YouTuber earns per 1,000 ad views is $18. Your earnings doesn't depend on CPC unlike Blogging but it depends on your videos, longers videos tends to earn you money than short videos.

The Bottom Line - What's Best?

After read through this analysis and you come to know what's involved in Blogging and YouTubing it's now up to you to decide which one you want to pursue as a career. So which one is more profitable? Well, it depends on your capabilities, but personally i think you're more likely to get views on YouTube than Blogging just with a little knowledge on SEO. However, you need more effort before you can qualify to start earning money on YouTube. On my preceding article we'll talk more about YouTube monetization.

While in Blogging it's easier to qualify for monetization but then you need SEO skills so you could drive traffic to your blog and thus earn money. Whichever career you want to pursue between Blogging and YouTubing just know that both are profitable and all needs effort to make it successful.
